HUMANA 6 TO HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE

Wednesday, May 19, 2010

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

The Humana 6 – the six health reform activists who were arrested for sitting in at the Humana Offices in West Palm Beach last October will be holding a press conference following the disposition of the trespassing charges against them at the Palm Beach County Courthouse (west side on Quadrille Blvd) at 9:00 am, Thursday, May 20, 2010.

The 6 were arrested last October 15th for protesting the abuses of Humana Insurance in denying coverage to patients which leads to the death of thousands because of their inability to get treatment. The protestors support an improved and expanded Medicare for All system that would remove the health insurance companies from the financing of health care and provide comprehensive coverage for all Americans from birth to death under a single payer system.

The Humana 6 plan to emphasize that just because a half-measure health bill has passed, it does not go far enough and that the movement to create a medicare for all system is not going away and that future actions may be planned to bring attention to the failure of the current system and the abuses of the profit-driven health insurance companies.

“The private insurance system is like a cancer. It is analogous to a malignant tumor, composed of cells that use up all the body’s nutrients, while performing no useful function. In the same way, private insurance is eating up the health care dollars that should be spent for direct delivery of patient care. In an effort to cure cancer, do we open up the patient, do some artful carving on the tumor to rearrange its shape, and then sew the patient back up, leaving the tumor intact? No. We do everything in our power to remove the tumor completely.” Cheryl Emmons.
