GET LOUD!

Sunday, January 10, 2010

The health care bill will get worse, not better, as it goes through House-Senate negotiations. Because Democratic Party leadership wants to expedite the bill and skip the democratic process of reconciliation, there will be closed-doors meeting of a few members of Congress and the White House that will decide the final legislation for vote. So much for transparent democracy. They won’t even let CSPAN in the room.

The Mobilization for Health Care for All is not stopping. We are going to continue to push for Medicare for All, a transparent process, and provisions that allow states to enact a single payer system. Please join our efforts!

We know that the majority of people want Medicare for All. The administration will sell this bill as a huge success when in reality it is a massive giveaway to the health insurance industry, with the unprecedented requirement that Americans spend up to 8% of their income on private corporate product. Instead of a real health care system that improves outcomes, saves lives, and ends medical bankruptcy, we are left with legislation that forces people to purchase an inadequately regulated private product, taxes health benefits, restricts women’s access to abortion, and does nothing to contain the sky rocketing costs of the world’s most expensive health care system.

What are we going to do about it? Get loud! The most important thing to do now is make sure Congress hears from you!

Call Reid, Pelosi, and your Members of Congress to tell them we want Medicare for All, and if the US Congress can’t do it, then let states implement real single-payer systems. Support Rep. Kucinich’s single-payer amendment. Call now toll free at 1-866-338-1015 and ask for your representatives office. Call your senator and congress member.

Activists are planning demonstrations this month. We have a short window of time to voice our opposition to this bill. All of the actions that have been planned have made a difference in making it clear that this legislation falls far short of our demands for universal, high quality health care, but we need to make sure that the Congress hears from us! We want public dollars to fund public programs, not CEO salaries. Join a demonstration!

If you can be in Washington, DC in the next three weeks when the bill is being considered and want to join us in taking action. Please contact us now so we can include you in the planning – info@mobilizeforhealthcare.org. Especially as the public and media are being blocked from the final deliberations on the bill, we want to expose the lack of transparency that was promised to us at the beginning of the health care debate. If you can join us in DC or want to plan an action locally, please contact info@mobilizeforhealthcare.org so we can put you in touch with local organizers.
